How to Steam Your Graduation Gown and Stoles for Picture-Perfect Photos

For all my USD, SDSU, UCSD, and Point Loma grads! Graduation is one of those big, once-in-a-lifetime milestones that deserves picture-perfect memories. And let’s be honest—nothing ruins those memories faster than a wrinkled gown. If you’re getting ready for a graduation photo session, let’s talk about how to make sure your regalia looks as crisp and polished as you feel inside. Here’s the step-by-step guide to steaming your graduation gown and stoles so you can shine in every shot.

Step 1: Unpack and Assess

The moment you get your graduation gown, take it out of the packaging. Don’t leave it folded up in the plastic bag until the morning of your session (trust me, future you will thank you). Lay it out flat or hang it up to let some of the deep creases start relaxing on their own.

Step 2: Check the Fabric

Most graduation gowns are made from synthetic materials like polyester, which means they don’t take kindly to high heat. Always check the care instructions on the tag before you start steaming. If there are no instructions, assume it’s delicate and treat it with extra care.

Step 3: Choose Your Steamer

A handheld garment steamer is your best friend for this job. If you don’t have one, a traditional steam iron with a vertical steam function can work too—just make sure it’s not too hot. No steamer? Hang the gown in the bathroom while you take a hot shower, and let the steam do its magic. This can be surprisingly effective if you leave the gown hanging in a steamy bathroom for about 15-20 minutes.

Step 4: Steam with Care

  • Hang the gown up on a sturdy hanger.
  • Start steaming from the inside to avoid water spots on the outside.
  • Hold the steamer a few inches away from the fabric and use gentle downward strokes.
  • Be extra careful around any embellishments, zippers, or delicate trim.
  • If using an iron with steam, never let the hot plate touch the fabric directly—hover and let the steam do the work.

Step 5: Don’t Forget the Stoles and Sashes

Stoles and sashes tend to wrinkle easily since they’re often made of satin or another silky material. Steam these separately using light strokes and keep them hanging until you’re ready to wear them. If you must use an iron, put a thin cloth (like a pillowcase) between the fabric and the iron to prevent shine or burns.

Step 6: Hang It Up & Let It Settle

Once everything is wrinkle-free, keep your gown and accessories hanging in a safe place. If you have pets, little siblings, or a tiny bit of clumsiness in your DNA (guilty), keep it in a closet where it won’t get knocked down or stepped on.

Step 7: Final Touch-Up Before the Photos

Right before your session, do a final check for any last-minute creases. A quick pass with the steamer or a spritz of wrinkle-release spray can fix any problem spots.

Now you’re ready to step in front of the camera with confidence, knowing your gown is looking as sharp as your achievement. Let’s capture this milestone in style!
