Sometimes the perfect light beckons me . . . all this glowing goodness, just calling to be immortalized before it slips away . . . and then a rogue wave

I have to admit that the La Jolla shoreline is not my number one choice for a beach session, merely because the contingency plans for full sun or high tide conditions there are not as good as those elsewhere in the county (like my two favorite beaches!). HOWEVER, this client has a special place in her heart for La Jolla, and so it really needed to be there! When I showed up to Windansea and found the perfect tide AND the perfect cloud cover . . . and then the client showed up with kiddos dressed in these bold, fun colors, I was so glad we were at La Jolla! I got SO WET doing this session, and it was SO much fun!!

It was so much fun to photograph this family for the first time, especially since two of their girls were my students long ago in English class! Now they are sweet moms with beautiful young families and adorable children. <3

It’s always a treat to photograph this gorgeous extended family, and it has been my honor to capture them over the last few years, as their family has grown.

We had to reschedule a bit in order find a clear day in January, but we did it! I love how this session turned out, with the clear sky and low tide.

I had an almost three-week break from beach sessions, so it was fun to get back out on the sand last week! I had the perfect clients to get me back into the swing of things, too, because they were fun, happy, and adventurous! Even though it was chilly (it WAS January, after all!), they were happy to put their toes in the water, and their clothing selections were spot on for the sunset on that clear evening. Looking forward to many more fun beach sessions in 2017!

Even though this little girl wasn’t feeling well that day, she perked up enough for us to get great images both of her and of her family! She and her twin brother have such a sweet and close relationship!

Since the beginning of my photography career, this wonderful extended family has been a constant source of encouragement. They are spreading out around the country this year, so it was a big priority to photograph the whole family while they were together over the holidays. Our morning time slot threatened rain, and rain it did, but we still got these important photos of the family together. Such fun cousin love! And the puppy!

For the last several years, my sister Melanie Monroe and I have traded photo sessions. Each of us photographs the other’s family and then edits the images of her OWN family. This year, Melanie drove with us way out into the wilderness for the “foresty” location my husband and kids requested. I edited the images and made up our Christmas card long before she sent me her edits, which she did “just for fun.” I love to see how two different photographers can take the same original file and give it their own unique style. I love both of our edits! Melanie went with a moody, autumn look. I chose my usual pastel ways. Both are keepers!

A gorgeous, sunny evening at Pacific Beach made for the perfect backdrop for this super fun and laid-back local family. I love capturing families enjoying the beach, and this family REALLY enjoyed it! Love these little girls and their sweet baby brother!

I am always honored when other photographers choose me to do their family portraits, and this session was no exception. When the forecast threatened rain, my client and I both got a little bit nervous, but the weather cleared just enough to make an amazingly beautiful November sky. With this family’s good looks and gorgeous styling, the result was nothing short of a blessing. I smiled the whole time I shot, and the whole time I edited!

Well, when this little one showed up to his beach session in nothing but his OshKosh overalls, I thought he couldn’t get any cuter. But then his mama pulled out the hand-knitted Santa hat her sister had made and overnighted specifically for this session, and I realized how very wrong I was. Cuteness OVERLOAD. Bring on Christmas!
