Fun people make fun photos. 😊
This family had the idea to piggyback on their son’s senior session and get some updated family photos. What a great idea! We had a blast on Coronado and captured some beautiful moments.
When I arrived at the beach to photograph my sister’s family last November, I was astounded at the sky God had provided for the occasion! Melanie (MelanieMonroePhotography.com) had dressed her girls in the ultimate in spinny-dresses, and she and Jeff spiffed up nicely, too. With a low tide for beautiful reflections, I was pretty much giddy. We even had a tiny visitor, who was supposed to be getting her own picture taken, insist on joining our 10-year-old princesses, spinning on the beach. As with all Monroe family photo sessions, there were some antics toward the end.
Believe it or not, all of these images were taken within two hours! It was sunny inland, where we started with our field session, and cloudy on the beach. Fortunately, this senior was beautiful everywhere!
You only turn thirteen once. When my daughter asked for a self-styled photo session for herself and two of her BFFs for her birthday, I thought of an area of town I have driven through hundreds of times, each time thinking “I bet that would make a good urban photo session spot.” I didn’t even scout it before we headed over there, girls all decked out in their favorite-color attire. They had a great time experimenting with the (rather out-of-character) “grungy, urban” look, and we were all amazed when we stumbled on huge graffiti art depicting Bible verses, a cross, and the words “Jesus Saves.” I couldn’t believe the way God set that up! Such grace. As Lissa embarks on her teen years, this photo session with her friends was a visual of how God shows up in the most unexpected places . . . and that light makes even un-pretty things beautiful.
For birthday #14, Lissa has requested more long dresses and flower wreaths on the beach. I have to say, that’s more my style.
I can’t tell you how much I love the opportunity to celebrate the inner AND outer beauty of young ladies on the verge of those oft-maligned teen years. These three thirteen-year-olds were a blast to photograph! They love each other so much, and their friendship offered many giggles and lots of expression, which made my job easy! As a photographer, sometimes the trickiest part is not lighting or posing — but just getting the subject’s guard down in order to get the natural expressions that we all love to see and NEED to preserve. These girls showed me their true personalities — their real inner beauty — right away, and the rest was just fun.
